January 9, 2025. Amesbury, MA The creator of the alt-golf-sport and owner of World League FlingGolf brings on the experienced executive to consult on its league strategy and association development.
While FlingGolf has some of its roots in lacrosse, it has drawn in players from seemingly every sport, hobby and interest over the years. But it is that lacrosse connection that has brought together and now formalized the relationship between Steve Govett, Vice Chair of Joe Tsai Sports, and CEO and Founder of New Swarm, Alex Van Alen
“Though my playing days were limited to just a few years in high school, the spirit of the game stayed with me and ultimately helped me develop FlingGolf. In Steve’s case, he not only has played at the highest level of the sport professionally in the National Lacrosse League, he turned that passion into a lifelong career in the business side of league, team and association development. I couldn’t be more excited to welcome him and his expertise to New Swarm as we take World League FlingGolf to the next level.” Van Alen stated from New Swarm’s headquarters in Massachusetts.
Govett’s career, not only in lacrosse circles, but also the broader sports business world, is impressive. After 4 years managing a golf course in New Jersey following his playing days, he worked for 15 years at Kroenke Sports in Denver as President of the NLL’s Colorado Mammoth and VP of Business Development. He then headed up the NLL expansion team San Diego Seals with the backing of tech entrepreneur and sports investor, Joe Tsai, and is currently Vice Chair of Joe Tsai Sports. Govett is also a Board Member of World Lacrosse and is heavily involved in the sport’s return to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
On his advising position with New Swarm, Govett’s dual interests of golf and lacrosse, combined with his experience in league management and association development come through. “I’ve worked in leagues nearly my whole adult life, as a player, in the front office of teams and as an advisor to a governing body. Seeing it happen with FlingGolf, and being part of it with a young sport and even younger league is an exciting opportunity for me to be involved,” Govett said. “I feel there is enormous potential for lacrosse players to pick up FlingGolf as they transition out of their competitive playing days, but are still looking for something that brings out their competitive fire. World League FlingGolf can offer them that opportunity and I am interested in helping to make that happen.”
Govett is working closely with Van Alen and New Swarm President and World League FlingGolf Commissioner John Pruellage on developing the strategic direction and execution for World League FlingGolf looking forward. He is also advising on the launch of a new association for the sport which will act as governing body, become a home for the sports’ handicap system, and provide a base for the entire FlingGolf community to connect digitally and in person. The association is expected to launch in Spring of 2025 in time for the beginning of the World League FlingGolf season.
“Steve’s experience and input has already had its impact on the direction we are taking the with all levels of organized FlingGolf play,” said Pruellage. “We have taken on a significant task in developing and growing our league in such a short time frame, and being able to draw on Steve's successful involvement in the growth of other leagues and teams is invaluable. As FlingGolf continues to grow, establishing the right framework for expanding our player community and providing opportunities for competitive play at all levels is critical. Steve’s advice on these matters is helping us do that efficiently and effectively.”
World League FlingGolf's New Swarm Tour will begin its 4th season in 2025 and will be featured on ESPN 2 as well as Regional Sports Networks across the US. The second annual Britain's Cup will be held in Bournemouth, England on June 14 and 15.
