Due to a major weather system heading into San Diego for Championship Weekend, the World League FlingGolf has decided to switch its Singles Championship round from the flood prone Riverwalk Golf Club in Mission Valley to Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos on Sunday morning. The call, made Wednesday morning by WLF Officials, will allow filming of the event to continue for ESPN, capturing the best players in the world who are currently arriving from across the US for the tournament.
The Team/Doubles portion of the Open, will be held on Saturday at a golf course to be determined in North County, with location and timing be finalized shortly.
"For sure we are a little disappointed in the weather for showcasing our big weekend in San Diego, but FlingGolf is not a fair weather sport," said Alex Van Alen of the WLF. "Our players have been ready for this since our Virginia Open in October, so we will continue to play. Regarding Riverwalk, we understood from the management of Touchstone Golf that with as much rain forecast for the coming few days leading up and including the Open, the course would likely be flooded and have to close. We look forward to getting back to Riverwalk for future events however."
Twin Oaks, a JC Golf managed course, was previously set to host the Team/Doubles event, so it is an easy transition to move the Singles to the San Marcos course. Weather is expected to be improved for the Sunday event. and ESPN filming.
The WLF's San Diego Open will feature 9 of the Top 10 and 16 of the top 20 ranked players, including numbers 1, 2 and 3, Austin "Showtime" Ebersole from Delaware, Ken "Kenzo" Pytluk from Colorado and Mike "Big Cat" Edwards from Pennsylvania, as well as the #1 ranked Women's player, Britt "Reggie Queen" Morrison from Delaware. The field of over 40 will be rounded out by top players from across the US including San Diego local, and prior sponsored skateboarder, Jake "Island Hopper" Anderson (#9 ranking) and Air Force veteran Mike "Maine Event" Derusha (#11) from Maine.
Spectators are welcomed and encouraged to meet and cheer on their favorite WLF Pro at Twin Oaks. The Finals, which will be filmed for ESPN, will be held after a qualifying round that starts at 8 on Sunday morning. Finals are expected to start around 1130-12 and go for 5 holes until about 2. Entry is Free to media and the public.
